Kirk's SF Peninsula & Waddell Poop Report for Wind and Kite Surfers 4-13-18

Latest Poop Report on San Francisco Peninsula and Waddell Beach Water Quality.
4/13/18 Comment: While still well above the "null" readings we get inside the bay after a few weeks of no rain, the water quality is pretty good.  On the other hand, some spots on the coast have poor water quality after the recent storms.

This report tracks results of weekly water quality reports that are of interest to windsurfers, kite boarders, regular surfers and anyone else who enjoys water sports where you are in the water.

GPS For Windsurfing - Garmin Forerunner 920XT

I've had it for nearly a year and I LOVE IT!

Garmin Forerunner 920XT Tri Bundle

Having two heart rate bands means I can keep the backup in my gear bag. Thus when I forget to put the band in my gear bag after washing and drying in fresh water I still have a backup band.

If you want to save some money, get it with only one heart rate monitor band.  As I type this today, Amazon has the red version on sale for $50 less than the blue one.

All are great and you can customize them for Windsurfing along with the standard settings for all three triathlon sports (run, swim and bike.)

Here is my screen to review my session to post on Facebook.

And this is the screen I watch while windsurfing to get my speed, time on the water and distance sailed.

August 31 Coyote Point Site Report

Great fun on 5.6m sail during ebb tide

So far, I've been very happy with my new Garmin 920XT and the heart rate monitor straps that store the data until after windsurfing then upload it to the watch.  After you finish sailing and hit "save" it uploads the data from the HR strap then uses bluetooth to send the info to my smartphone that uploads it to Garmin, effortlessly.  It was a lot more work with the 310XT.

Oh, and the top speeds are much more reliable.

Great fun on 5.6m sail during ebb tide. Top sustained speed reached at 24.9 MPH also

Coyote Pt Site Report 5/27/15

Coyote Point Site Report for Wednesday May 27, 2015

Team Real Wind . Really fun, challenging hour on 6.6 sailworks Hucker for me and 7.3 Nash for Carl. Some great swells on port and speed runs on starboard

Posted by Kirk Lindstrom on Wednesday, May 27, 2015
My Garmin 310XT GPS says I hit 38.5. I don't think I hit 38.5 MPH though I didn't crash so I'm not sure why it would read so high... but, given the conditions, I was probably hitting near record speed on a few runs so maybe the conditions might have been just right when running downwind with the chop and gusts hitting near 30 with a 6.6 Sailworks Hucker sail where I could have easily been on my 5.6 Hucker.

Palo Alto Mud Dawgs Bid Farewell to Hung Chen

Farewell Hung!

On Memorial Day Monday some of the Palo Alto Mud Dawgs bid farewell to our friend, Hung Chen.

Bill Keating and his beautiful wife, Emy, hosted the party at their Redwood City home.

Hung with his wife and two kids will return to Taiwan later this week to live. Hung will work at TSMC and care for his aging parents.

Hung is a great friend and we will miss him.

Here are a few pictures from the party.

Coyote Point on Saturday May 23, 2015

Hung and I are both regulars at Coyote Point, too. While many of us are lazy on the beach waiting for better wind, we'd often find Hung out having great fun on his big board working on tricks in low wind and then powering up in the gusts to do other tricks.

Here is a picture of Hung jibing at Coyote Point on Saturday May 23, 2015 after he caught a gust to do a duck jibe.   Notice all others in the photo, except for the kiter, are swimming in!

I went out on my biggest board (141L) and found it was too much in the 28 MPH gusts behind SFO and too light for the near zero lulls inside to be comfortable.  (I did not have to swim in!)

While most of us were complaining on the beach after trying to sail the 0 to 28 MPH wind, Hung was out sailing on his very floaty board inside with a smaller sail to handle the gusts, making me wish I had a huge board for those days so I could do this too.

Coyote Point Update

#1  Heads-up! The Tour de Peninsula (TDP) bike ride is Sunday August 3 and 1,300 riders will be coming back into Coyote Point from Airport Rd via the bike path between 10 & 3 pm..
  • I expect Palo Alto and Third Ave to be extra crowded with windsurfers avoiding the TDP at Coyote
#2  Ramp Repair: (see attached images)

  • Three ramps are closed for two weeks while they replace the blocks with blocks without holes, fix the grade and add some padded mats.
    • Take the 2 wk estimate with a grain of cyanide.  This is the same construction crew that made a mess of a rather simple job with clear drawings.
  • Kipps Zygarewicz (Boardsports manager) says the work should be done in two weeks and they will fix the beach by removing the big rocks where we used to have sand.
  • SANDBAGS! ASAP: Bring a wheelbarrow or hand truck to "liberate" the sand bags to improve and expand our upper ramp outside the project to handle the extra weekend traffic while the ramps are closed.  If you only have time to help for a few minutes, move a bag from the ramps to our upwind sandbag ramp.

We also need to clear small rocks at the base of the ramp during low tides. All help is appreciated.
